The scale of Australia’s energy transition is clear, but so too are the pressures shaping it, from global economic volatility to domestic policy complexity and a constrained talent pool.

The transition is not being limited by ambition or even demand. Increasingly, it is being shaped by the availability of skilled talent needed to deliver it.
From where I sit as a Managing Director at Morson Edge Australia, this isn’t a new observation. We’ve been watching this pressure build for years. But what’s changed is the urgency. The challenge is progressively one of execution.
And execution, in practical terms, comes down to the workforce.

Net zero needs people

Across the market, economic conditions are tightening. Capital is more selective, inflation continues to shape cost bases, and large-scale infrastructure projects are facing greater scrutiny around timing and return. At the same time, geopolitical instability is influencing global energy flows, supply chains and access to the critical materials needed to support the transition.
Domestically, the direction is clear, but the pathway remains complex. Federal targets and the “Future Made in Australia” set strong intent, yet delivery sits across a fragmented mix of state priorities, planning frameworks and approval processes that do not always move in step.
Within that context, the shift in the energy system is accelerating. Renewable generation is expanding, coal-fired assets are approaching retirement, and the grid is becoming more decentralised and data-driven.
But as momentum builds, a more structural constraint is becoming clear.
I see it in the conversations I have with clients every week: the success of Australia’s energy transition will depend on the ability to align the right capability with the right projects at the right time. Without that alignment, even the most ambitious plans risk slowing before they translate into real-world outcomes.

The workforce constraint in Australia’s energy transition

The pace of change across Australia’s energy system is unprecedented.
The transition is unfolding alongside a broader infrastructure supercycle, with simultaneous investment flowing into energy, transport, utilities and advanced manufacturing. The result is sustained demand for capital, resources and, critically, skilled labour across multiple sectors at once.
Legacy coal-fired assets are approaching end of life, while replacement capacity must be delivered at speed and at scale. Transmission infrastructure requires expansion, and grid systems are becoming more decentralised, interconnected and data-driven.
At the same time, planning approvals, supply chain pressures and geopolitical uncertainty are adding friction to an already complex transition.
Labour is another critical pressure point. According to the Occupation Shortage List from Jobs and Skills Australia, 29% of assessed occupations are currently in national shortage. While this marks a modest improvement in recent years, significant gaps remain, particularly across engineering, construction, digital and skilled trades.
In the context of an infrastructure supercycle, those shortages are amplified, as energy projects compete directly with other major programmes for the same limited talent pools.
The implication for project owners and operators is one I raise with clients regularly. Delivery risk is increasing. And in my experience, the projects that feel it first are the ones that didn’t see it coming.

The changing shape of energy skills

The workforce underpinning the transition is evolving just as quickly as the system itself.
Traditional power engineering is no longer sufficient on its own. Increasingly, projects require blended capability:

Engineers who understand both physical infrastructure and digital systems.

Project leaders who can navigate renewable integration and grid complexity.

Technicians operating across storage, automation and real-time monitoring environments.

This convergence of engineering and technology is accelerating demand across the full project lifecycle, from development through to operations. It is also reshaping what “in-demand” looks like, placing greater emphasis on adaptability and cross-disciplinary expertise.
In this context, workforce strategy has moved to the centre of project delivery. Access to talent is no longer a downstream consideration. It is increasingly a determining factor in whether projects are delivered on time and on budget.
Organisations that anticipate demand, build pipelines early and access specialist capability at pace are better positioned to maintain momentum.
Those that cannot face delays, rising costs and increased operational risk.

How we support energy projects in Australia

At Morson Edge Australia, we operate within this shifting landscape every day, supplying specialist talent across renewable energy, infrastructure and engineering sectors. We’ve been placing renewables specialists in Australia since before the sector had a mainstream name. That history matters. The networks we’ve built over 24 years are not something you can replicate quickly.
The result is a more connected model. Global insight, applied through local market knowledge. Our footprint across Australia, combined with Morson Edge’s broader network and sector coverage across the globe, enables a more proactive approach to workforce challenges.
We are not simply responding to vacancies. We work with clients to align talent strategy with project timelines, building capability ahead of demand rather than reacting to it.
In practical terms, this includes supporting:

Wind, solar and battery storage projects at critical delivery phases

Infrastructure upgrades linked to renewable integration

Engineering and construction programmes facing acute labour constraints

Advanced manufacturing aligned to energy transition supply chains

The focus is consistent. Ensuring the right capability is in place before it becomes a constraint.
Timing matters as much as talent.

Delivering talent where it matters

With Australia’s energy transition plans, including a 43% emission reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050, this scale of ambition and the opportunity are significant. So too is the complexity of delivery.
Becoming a renewable energy superpower will depend on infrastructure, policy and investment.
But it will also depend on whether the workforce can keep pace. So, the challenge now is execution. And execution, increasingly, comes down to people.
At Morson Edge Australia, we have been navigating this for 24 years. Placing renewables specialists since before the sector had a name in Australia. Building the networks that keep these projects moving.
We’re not stopping now.
Speak to me at rob.lawrence@acrworld.com about your workforce strategy or explore how we support energy projects across Australia.

Powering Australia’s renewable future starts with the right people

The prospect of a new role, with new opportunities, responsibilities, and a higher salary, can be thrilling. However, initial enthusiasm often fades into job search anxiety as job hunters become overwhelmed by confusing role descriptions, jargon, and conflicting advice about interview techniques.
Understanding Job Search Anxiety
Job search anxiety is common, especially for those unhappy in their current role. It can manifest in many ways, including restlessness, lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and negative thoughts. These tips might help you conquer the stress wherever you are in your job search journey.
Causes of Job Search Anxiety
Job search anxiety is not a sign of weakness or an indication that you can’t find a brilliant new role. Understanding the causes can help address anxious feelings. Common causes include:

Fear of rejection or failure

Financial pressure

Lack of control over the process

Comparison with others

Uncertainty about the future

By identifying these causes, you can address them and reduce their impact on your well-being. For example, if your anxiety stems from fear of rejection, focus on your strengths and past career successes. If financial pressure is the issue, creating a budget might help you feel better.
Understanding why you feel stressed or anxious about your job search can help you anticipate challenges and reduce the chances of becoming overwhelmed or burnt out.
Coping Strategies for Job Search Anxiety
Anxiety manifests in various ways, and coping strategies that work for some might not work for others. Try these methods to find what works for you:

Build a Support Network

Do you have a friend or colleague who has recently moved jobs? Learning about their experiences can help you feel less isolated during your job search.

Focus on Self-Care

Activities that promote physical and emotional well-being, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies, can reduce stress and improve mood.

Set Realistic Goals

Break down the job search process into manageable steps and set achievable goals to feel more in control and motivated.

Practice Mindfulness and Positive Thinking

Mindfulness techniques like deep breathing and visualisation can help you stay calm during stressful moments.

Develop a Routine

Having a daily structure can help you feel in control and allow you to measure your progress.

Seek Professional Help if Necessary

If job search anxiety interferes with your daily life or causes significant distress, seeking help from a mental health professional may be beneficial.

Staying Motivated During Your Job Search
If the process takes longer than expected or if you receive multiple rejections, it can be tough to stay motivated. Here are some strategies to keep your spirits up:
Track Your Progress: Keeping track of job applications and follow-ups helps you stay organised and motivated by seeing your progress. Celebrate small achievements, such as securing an interview or passing a pre-interview test, to build momentum.
Explore Alternative Career Paths: Exploring different industries or roles can expand your job opportunities. Taking courses, attending workshops, or volunteering can help you develop new skills.
Maintain a Positive Attitude: Finding the right job requires persistence, patience, and a willingness to adapt and learn. By incorporating these tips and strategies, you can keep job search anxiety at bay and increase your chances of finding your ideal next step.

Overcoming Job Search Anxiety: Strategies for Success

When we talk about investing time in your employees, it’s more than just their hours at work. Ensuring your employees are happy on the job positively impacts their home lives too. Promoting a healthy and happy lifestyle at work contributes to overall well-being. Simple initiatives like providing childcare support, encouraging healthy eating, promoting exercise, fostering work-life balance, and offering flexibility are key. The more you support your employees, the more likely they are to reach their full potential.
Research indicates a strong link between employee happiness and productivity. According to a study by the University of Warwick, happiness can lead to a 12% increase in productivity. Companies prioritising employee well-being are reaping the benefits. By aligning your company’s values and mission with employee development, you can challenge and motivate your team to grow.
Engage and Motivate Your Staff with These Top Five Tips:
1. Build Strong Teams
Creating a strong team and promoting effective collaboration motivates individuals to excel. A supportive team environment alleviates stress and fosters learning and growth. Encourage team meetups and team-building exercises to strengthen relationships and communication. A cohesive team contributes positively to each member reaching their full potential. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work!
2. Promote Individuality
Recognise that each employee is unique. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses helps you provide the right tools for them to succeed. Individuality and diverse thinking are what make businesses thrive. By acknowledging and leveraging each person's unique skills, you can enhance overall performance.
3. Open Your Door
An open-door policy encourages employees to share ideas and seek advice without fear. This openness fosters a resilient and creative team, helping employees realise their full potential. When employees feel comfortable approaching leadership, it promotes a culture of innovation and productivity.
4. Offer On-the-Job Training
Investing in training is highly motivating for employees. Personalised development plans ensure training is tailored to help each individual reach their goals. Continuous on-the-job training keeps everyone up-to-date and aligned with company objectives. A well-trained employee feels valued and contributes to a thriving company.
5. Care About Your Employees
Create a positive workplace environment where employees feel valued and part of something bigger. Offer competitive salaries, benefits, and opportunities for career advancement. Showing that you value and respect your employees is the best way to ensure company success.
By implementing these strategies, you can create a work environment that not only enhances employee happiness but also boosts productivity and overall company success.

Leadership Blog: Boosting Employee Happiness and Productivity

The start of a new year is a pivotal time for businesses to set goals for the upcoming year and review the previous year's performance. For many businesses, this includes conducting annual performance reviews.
The Importance of Annual Performance Reviews
Annual performance reviews are a staple in companies of all sizes, providing a structured approach to evaluating employee performance over the past year. A recent survey revealed that over 70% of organisations still perform annual reviews. These reviews are often tied to KPIs and formal progression plans, offering a chance for both employers and employees to exchange feedback and set new goals.
Benefits of Annual Performance Reviews
Constructive Feedback
One of the primary benefits of performance reviews is the opportunity for constructive feedback. Employees gain insights into their strengths and areas for improvement, guiding them in enhancing their skills and addressing weaknesses, which promotes personal and professional growth.
Goal Setting
Performance reviews are crucial for setting objectives for the upcoming period. This process helps align individual objectives with organisational goals, fostering a sense of purpose and direction. Clear goals provide employees with expectations and a roadmap for success.
Recognition and Motivation
Positive performance is acknowledged during reviews, making employees feel valued. Recognising achievements boosts morale and motivation, leading to increased job satisfaction. Performance reviews also often form the basis for promotions, salary increases, and other rewards.
Open Communication
Regular performance reviews facilitate open communication between employees and managers, allowing for discussions of concerns, challenges, and aspirations. This transparency fosters a trusting relationship, minimises misunderstandings, and aligns expectations.
Identifying Training Needs
Annual performance reviews help identify skill gaps and training needs. Managers can design targeted training programs to enhance employee capabilities, contributing to overall organizational development.
Drawbacks of Annual Performance Reviews
Subjectivity and Bias
A significant drawback of performance reviews is the potential for subjectivity and bias. Managers may unintentionally favor certain employees or be influenced by personal preferences, leading to unfair evaluations and undermining the credibility of the review process.
Stress and Anxiety
The anticipation of performance reviews can cause stress and anxiety for employees. Fear of negative feedback or unknown outcomes can create a tense work environment, hindering productivity rather than encouraging improvement. This stress can also lead to short-term productivity surges before reviews, followed by a decline.
Infrequency of Feedback
Annual reviews may not be frequent enough to address issues in a timely manner. Waiting a year to provide feedback can result in missed opportunities for improvement and hinder employee development.
Overemphasis on Metrics
Some performance review systems rely heavily on quantitative metrics, potentially overlooking qualitative aspects of an employee’s contributions. This focus on numbers may not capture the full scope of an individual’s abilities or the challenges they have overcome.
Potential for Demotivation
Negative feedback, if not handled properly, can demotivate employees and lead to disengagement. A poorly executed review can damage morale and hinder teamwork, counteracting the intended purpose of fostering improvement and growth.
Is There a Better Way to Monitor Workplace Performance?
Effective performance management is crucial for talent retention and development. Regular feedback and continuous communication are essential for keeping employees engaged and addressing issues promptly. A 2020 survey concluded that companies implementing continuous performance feedback are almost 40% more effective at attracting talent and 44% better at retaining talent compared to those relying on annual reviews.
Instead of annual reviews, consider ongoing feedback and employee development. Regular communication helps mitigate the drawbacks of annual reviews and ensures performance management contributes positively to both individual and organisational success.
Striking the Right Balance
The effectiveness of performance reviews depends on the organisation’s approach, the quality of feedback, and the fairness of the evaluation process. Striking a balance between accountability and support is essential to ensure that performance reviews foster growth and success for both employees and the organisation.
